What are natural perfumes?

Natural perfumery is the art of creating perfumes using only materials of organic origin.  These include essential oils and absolutes which are the extracts of flowers, leaves, stems, wood, roots, or seeds.  Tree resins, concretes, floral waxes, tinctures, and infusions may also be used.  Some natural perfumers include animal scents such as genuine musk and civet, while others use only botanicals so the products are vegan. These perfumes are also known as botanical perfumes.

Aren’t most fragrances natural?

Virtually all fragrances available today use synthetic aroma chemicals because of the lower cost, higher availability and wider variety of scents.  However, many people such as those with allergies, asthma, and multiple chemical sensitivties have negative reactions to such fragrance.  As one such person, I began to develop my own fragrances that would not make me sick.  I fell in love with the art of perfuming with plant aromatics. Often people may find they can enjoy these natural aromatics while they are not able to tolerate regular fragrance. However, please be aware that it is not uncommon for companies to market their perfume as a "natural perfume" or a "botanical perfume" when they actually contain the same synthetic ingredients. Natural perfumes are not just oil based perfumes or alchohol free perfumes. Natural perfumery, or botanical perfumery, is about creating with the powerful essences of aromatic plants.

What is great about natural perfume?

Natural perfumes are deep and complex with subtle nuances.  Because these are the real plant scents, they are dynamic and true and beautiful. The perfume is intimate rather than diffusive, and rather than fill a room or leave a large “scent trail,” the perfume lingers in your personal space.  Try wearing the perfume on your skin, as your skin’s natural chemistry will affect the perfume’s aroma.  You’ll also notice that the scent will evolve and change as the day wears on. The top notes give way to the heart notes, which then dry down to deep basenotes.
